There are fishing hot spots galore this week, according to Tackleworld Bundaberg. The action includes mackerel and tuna inshore, blue salmon in the Burnett River, flathead in the Kolan, whiting at Elliott River and awesome barra at Lake Monduran.
If the forecast goes our way there might be a couple of small weather windows early in the mornings this weekend for the Bundaberg area.
Bundaberg inshore
The mackerel and tuna have turned up in big numbers over the past week. Anglers have been getting spooled while throwing into birds working just in front of the lighthouse at Burnett Heads!
I found last week the way to get the attention of the bigger Spanish was to throw surface poppers.
It’s super exciting when they launch five feet out the water with your popper attached.
Also, with the cooler conditions and the amount of bait around, it will be well worth chasing snapper.
Floating pilchards and jigging Samaki Vibes off the bottom is a deadly way to target them.
Burnett River
The blue salmon has definitely been the standout fish in the Burnett this week! Working soft and hard vibes off the bottom has been the standout technique .
Make sure you mix the retrieve up. Sometimes the aggressive double twitch is what it takes to get their attention.
The bream have been on as well. Throwing small Z-Man grubs on very light gear is a whole lot of fun.
I like fishing for them on the tops and bottoms of the tides.
The slack water allows you to fish with lightly-weighted jig heads which improves the bite hugely.
Kolan River and Baffle Creek
The Kolan River and Baffle Creek have been producing some cracker flathead over the past week.
Most people have been targeting them on the outgoing tide.
Slow rolling small 3” soft plastics over shallow sand bars is a deadly way to get good numbers of these awesome fish.

Also, don’t forget to throw the crab pots in because there’s been some awesome sized chocolate bucks caught over the past week.
Elliott River
The Elliott is still fishing well for whiting. With the low tide being around 8am, pumping yabbies and fishing the incoming tide will be ideal.
With the smaller tides I’d be focusing on fishing towards the mouth where there will be more current.
While having your whiting rods set it will be well worth a go flicking small plastics.
There will be plenty of flatty’s getting around with an odd tailor roaming through as well.
Lake Monduran
There’s still some awesome barra action happening up at the dam! Jigging soft vibes from the timber has been the standout way to get the bite over the past week.
I’d definitely be fishing the afternoons due to the cold mornings we’ve been experiencing.
Always remember to fish the windblown points. Don’t be scared to work your lure very aggressively because sometimes that’s what it takes to get the barra fired up.
