The team at Angels Community Group in Bundaberg provides support and assistance for parents who are looking to gain the skills and confidence to re-enter the workforce.
Executive officer Sue Tasker said the Preparing Parents for Work program would begin on Monday, with up to 10 residents expected to participate over six months.
Ms Tasker said the government initiative was the first of its kind in the region.
Ms Tasker said the Preparing Parents for Work program would offer training in hospitality and retail from the Angels Community Group organisation, Second 2 None, at 45a Walla Street.
“This is about giving parents who have been out of the workforce for a long time some training and skill to hopefully land a new job,” she said.
“Participants will be doing work experience a few days a week.
“They will be helping to make up to 85 lunches a week to distribute to school students who don’t have food.
“They will also take part in barista training, which is an accredited module, as well as working in our retail section of the store.”
Ms Tasker said while the Preparing Parents for Work program was designed to develop skill, it would also focus on each participant’s confidence, or lack thereof.
“Often, if people have been out of the work environment for a long time, they lose those confidence skills,” she said.
“It’s usually the biggest issue for them.
“This is the perfect opportunity to boost that back up while getting on-the-job training in a hands on and supportive environment.”

Angels Community Group, a registered charity and community-based organisation, was formed in April 2015 when founding members Kerri Savidge and Sue Tasker realised the power that comes from giving people a purpose.
This has been accomplished by creating a supportive environment where people experiencing a sense of loss are able to achieve or regain the confidence and skills necessary to lead meaningful social and economic lives.
