Local players charged through the opposition to see Central Queensland Bulls crowned champion region in the Queensland Junior Touch State Championships at the weekend.

Bundaberg Touch Association hosted 500 competitors and officials from North Queensland down to the New South Wales border at the Greg Duncan Fields in an event that was hailed a huge success both on and off the field.

Going into the grand finals all six CQ Bulls teams, made up of touch players from Bundaberg, were looking strong and five teams walked away as champions, dominating rivals from across the State.

The touch talent was on show

Bundaberg Touch Association president Dave Field said the weekend overall had been perfect and there was a lot of talent on the fields.

“The kids have been really good, and we have seen some amazing touch talent here,” Dave said.

“We’ve had a great atmosphere and it’s a great venue we have here, and everything was well supported across the region.

“Our players really stacked up well against the other regions and certainly proved their positions in teams for selections.”

Bundaberg Mayor Jack Dempsey said it was fantastic to see the Bundaberg players doing so well in the Central Queensland Bulls team, and it was a feather in the region's cap to dominate over the metro teams.

“Certainly it shows, from the comments I had from around the crowd, that people have really enjoyed the carnival here,” Mayor Dempsey said.

“We have plenty of young champions coming though, and it’s really great work from Bundaberg Touch Football and the volunteers for the facility and its certainly something we should all be proud of and a say a big thank you to them.

“It’s not only great for the town economically but it's also great to see some young athletes coming through as well.”

Mayor Dempsey said it was wonderful to see the CQ Bulls named the touch football champion region as it was more than a decade ago since this occurred.
