Beautiful architecture and photography are a winning combination, especially for two entrants in the recent Open House Bundaberg photography competition.

Sponsored by Connor O’Meara solicitors, the competition captured a range of significant buildings of the Bundaberg Region through the eyes of the community.

Amanda Fairbrother won the Open Division for her unique shot of The Generator hallway, on the first floor of the Post Office building.

Catherine Baumann's daughter Mia won the Junior Division of the Open House Bundaberg competition with an artistic shot taken during a backstage tour of the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre.

She said she enjoyed the day out with her family at Open House, taking in the history and architecture of the Bundaberg Post Office, the Former Commercial Bank of Sydney and experienced a backstage tour of the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre.

“It was really good to see some buildings we haven’t seen before,” Catherine said.

“The older architecture was really good on the top floor of the Post Office.”

The Baumann family welcomed the photography competition addition to the Open House event which provided them with a greater appreciation of the unique architectural elements of the buildings.

“It makes you look a bit closer, especially with the detail aspect of the competition, for the little things that you otherwise might not notice or look for.”

Architect Tomas O’Malley shared the tough task of selecting two winning entries from the Open and Junior divisions.

“There were a good range of styles of photographs, and people have taken some interesting aspects of buildings they otherwise might not have been able to see without the access of Open House,” Tomas said.

“It was a hard decision to pick the winners, but we went for ones that gave an artistic view of Bundaberg’s built history.”

Professional photographer Matthew Daniels (Right Image Photography) provided another viewpoint as part of the contest judging panel.

“I was impressed with the quality and thought that went into these images for the competition,” Matthew said.

“The juniors were amazing with what they captured, and excite me when I think about the images they may take in the future.”
