Mick Kettle: Over 60s One Day International
Bundaberg's Mick Kettle bowled his way to man of the match for a recent Over 60s One Day International

Bundaberg veteran cricketer Mick Kettle’s man of the match performance helped the Australian team snatch victory from England in the second Over 60s One Day International.

The left arm spinner took 4/31 off 10 overs for the Australian veteran team during this week’s game which levelled the series at one all.

“I was lucky enough to have a good day with the ball,” Mick said.

“We restricted them to 190 after we’d scored 212.

“It was a good win to our guys.”

The English team is travelling the country on the series’ return tour with the third and final game to be played in Brisbane in coming days.

Mick sure of Over 60s One Day International win

Mick said he liked Australia’s chances to take out the Over 60s One Day International.

“We’ve got a better than even team, on home territory, a bit of homegrown advantage,” he said.

Mick Kettle has been a member of the Australian Over 60s team since 2017 after a lifelong love for cricket.

Growing up in Bundaberg he said he had played since he was a schoolboy, taking it back up again seriously in the early 1990s.

He played for Norths Cricket Club for more than 20 years before transitioning to Bundaberg Veterans.

He said there was plenty to love about the game.

“The camaraderie, the people you meet through all the different places you go,” he said.

“The great fun you have on the field.

“It’s just a test of skill and patience.”

He said his game hadn’t changed much over the years other than becoming “a little bit more experienced” and accommodating for some aches and pains.

“I had to hone my skills in bowling through the way I delivered a ball so I can stay on top of what a batsmen is trying to do to me.

“Coming up with ways to trick a batsmen is basically about it.”

In addition to looking forward to the next Over 60s One Day International, Mick said he loved to play a bit of backyard cricket with the grandkids to keep in form.
