The RFDS and LifeFlight will begin operations at their new facility in late February, with construction in the Bundaberg aviation precinct nearing completion.

Construction began in April 2019 and will provide a joint Royal Flying Doctor Service and LifeFlight aeromedical base when it is up and running.

An RFDS spokesperson said the project had created 110 new jobs in Bundaberg, with local company Hutchinson Builders awarded the contract for the build.

“Materials were sourced locally, including over 3200 tonnes of concrete, 60 tonnes of reinforcement and 130 tonnes of structural steel,” the spokesperson said.

Designed and built specifically to meet the needs of aeromedical services, the spokesperson said the base would improve health and safety standards, medical equipment storage, aircraft maintenance and upgrade amenities for both patients and staff.

“Being purpose built, it will be tailored to the needs of pilots, nurses and office staff,” the spokesperson said.

“It will be a lot easier to do our jobs and will also cater for the needs of our patients.

“The building will also include a new patient transfer facility, meaning patients will be transferred to Queensland Ambulance Vehicles inside and in comfort, out of the elements.”

Community and Council chip in

The spokesperson said the state-of-the-art facility was equal to the best in the country, with many people involved in getting the project off the ground.

“The new base is only possible thanks to the incredible support of the Bundaberg community,” the spokesperson said.

Mayor Jack Dempsey with Ian Finlayson from RFDS, Angela Molloy, Leanne Angel and Fiona MacAnally from Life Flight discuss plans for the Bundaberg Aeromedical Base and patient transfer facility.

“While the project was partially funded by the Federal Government’s Building Better Regions Fund, both RFDS and LifeFlight were required to raise the remaining funds through philanthropic efforts.

“Those who have donated to the construction of the base will be featured on a special tile wall at the front entrance.”

Bundaberg Regional Council also donated $100,000 towards the project, with Mayor Jack Dempsey saying he was pleased to continue the support of the two services.

“From their Bundaberg base these services provide a valuable, life-saving service to people not just from our region but the wider Wide Bay area,” Mayor Dempsey said.

“The emergency support provided by these outstanding community organisations is highly valued by our community.”
