Bundaberg surf lifesaver Georgia Martin’s Surf Girl journey may be finished but the memories she gained will last a lifetime.
Georgia, with her fellow seven Surf Girl ambassadors, spent the past week on the Gold Coast for three days of judging.
This included community awareness initiatives, mock beach rescues, interviews with each of the judges, and a gala event with a speech summing up her last 12 months.
“I am really proud to have been involved,” Georgia said.
“I’m waiting at the Brisbane airport at the moment, exhausted and ready to come home, but I have had the most amazing experience.”
The annual fundraising and member development program, which celebrates females in lifesaving, has raised almost $17 million for surf life saving clubs across Queensland since its inception in 1964.
The 20-year-old said during the last seven days, the 2020 Surf Girl ambassadors had participated in a variety of activities, including community awareness about water and surf safety.
“Educating children about water safety is really important to me,” Georgia said.
“I’ve really enjoyed my time as a Surf Girl ambassador, travelling to all the different regions and spreading the community awareness would be my highlight.”
Georgia said attending the gala evening was a special event and one that she will never forget.
“I was definitely not used to wearing a ballgown,” Georgia laughed.
“It is was such a special night, and as we heard the special thank you from community awareness manager Helen Hallett, that was something I will always remember.”
During her time as a surf girl ambassador Georgia said she learnt invaluable life skills and worked toward her goal of becoming a community awareness and water safety educator.
Georgia encouraged anyone considering taking part in the next surf girl program to give it a go as it may change their life, as it helped change hers.
