The R100 Baton Relay, celebrating 100 years of Rotary in Australia and New Zealand communities, is making its way through Childers and surrounds.
Having been handed on by the Hervey Bay Rotary clubs last Thursday night, the baton and its holders have taken in iconic Bundaberg Region sites and visited organisations and businesses that have worked with Rotary to enhance our communities.
Liz Bunn, Rotary Club of Childers president, said the relay was a vehicle to promote the work done by the organisation within the two countries over the course of 100 years, and to connect all Rotary clubs with their communities.
Liz said the Rotary Club of Childers was fortunate to have established a strong connection with its community.
“Most people are aware that Rotary is one of the only service clubs still running and that people within the community can rely on us to provide support where it’s needed,” Liz said.
“Rotary has a history of helping the community and while the ways in which we help may have changed over the years, we’re still there to provide service to the community.”
Since its arrival in Childers, the baton was escorted by police to the town’s places of interest on Saturday before being escorted by Rotary Club members to Woodgate where locations visited included Woodgate Hotel, bowls and fishing clubs, the RSL war memorial, the community bus service that Rotary helped finance, and Woodgate Beach on Sunday.
On Monday its passage included Cordalba State School and the Childers Country Line Dancers, and today it was conveyed to Childers CWA, Isis Central Mill on a locomotive and to Goodwood State School.
The schedule until its handover to the Bundaberg Rotary clubs on Saturday includes Mammino Gourmet Ice Cream, Doolbi War and Palace Backpackers Hostel memorials, Childers historical and military museums, Palace Backpackers, several schools and the Paragon Theatre.
The relay, launched by the Rotary District 9570 Central Queensland, stretches from Maryborough to Mackay and west to Longreach, encompassing 47 Rotary clubs and 600,000 square kilometres.
The theme for the baton relay is ‘Celebrating our past, embrace our future – We are Rotary’.
