Rear Admiral joins Bundaberg’s Anzac Day celebrations

Ashfield Country Practice’s Anzac Day dawn service will this year be attended by special guest Rear Admiral Jenny Firman.

The practice, run by Dr Brad Murphy who is a navy veteran himself, serves many local veterans and has almost 500 veteran patients.

Rear Admiral Jenny Firman is currently the Chief Health Officer of the Department of Veterans Affairs, based in Canberra and is travelling to the service to show her support for the work the practice does in the sector.

Dr Murphy explained that it is an honour to be able to host Rear Admiral Jenny Firman, who has been part of the Royal Australian Navy for over 22 years.

“The support from Jenny as the CHO of DVA, as a senior Naval Officer and Medical Officer is fantastic acknowledgement of the great job the team is doing at Ashfield Country Practice in supporting veterans and their families in the Bundaberg Region,” Dr Murphy said.

“Moreover, it is a great opportunity to promote health and wellbeing for all our veterans.”

Anzac Day holds special significance to Dr Murphy, who is proud to continue supporting local veterans in their post military lives.

“I am very proud of the opportunity to gather on Anzac Day and take the opportunity to remember those who have served this country with honour, those that gave the ultimate sacrifice, those that gave their health and continue to work through the challenges of physical and mental health challenges in their post-military lives,” he explained.

“We are grateful to remember our veterans who have assisted in making and keeping this great nation safe and such a great place to live.”

Associate Professor Brad Murphy also works with other veteran GPs and Department of Veterans Affairs and Defence to establish training resources that will assist general practice supporting veterans once they transition from the military into their civilian lives.
