Each May the Bundaberg community marks Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month to raise awareness and send a clear message that domestic and family violence in families and homes will not be tolerated.
EDON Place DFV coordinator Jacinda Warner said Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month was an annual event held each May to raise community awareness of the social and personal impacts of domestic and family violence and the support available to those affected.
Jacinda said it was important to promote a clear message of no tolerance of domestic and family violence in Queensland communities, while ensuring those who are experiencing domestic and family violence know how to access help and support.
She hopes Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month, encourages people who use abuse or violence, to take responsibility for their behaviour and seek support to change.
EDON Place will be holding a candle lighting ceremony at the front of the Bundaberg Police Station today, 5 May, from 5:30pm, to remember those who have died because of domestic and family violence
All are welcome to attend.
Council’s portfolio spokesperson for community services Cr Tracey McPhee said Council was joining with communities across Australia to send a clear message that domestic and family violence was not to be tolerated.
“We will be highlighting the importance of a community approach to domestic violence prevention by encouraging businesses and the public in Childers and Gin Gin to take part in spreading the message via social media with the use of Instagram frames,” Cr McPhee said.
On 11 May EDON Place will provide a presentation at the Anglican Mother’s Union, surrounding the Responsible and Respectful Choices Men’s Program.
EDON Place and the Queensland Police Service Vulnerable Persons Unit will also have a presence at the Gin Gin Domestic and Family Violence Prevention Month Community barbecue on 13 May to provide domestic and family violence information and raise awareness within the region.
