Expectations smashed by Sounds of Rock

Dressed in his Jackie Howe, you couldn’t wipe the smile off Gary Roebuck’s face as he, along with thousands of others, was excited to be at Sounds of Rock.

The inaugural Sounds of Rock festival reached capacity with a 4000-strong crowd of music fans enjoying iconic Aussie tunes including Eagle Rock, Chained to the Wheel, and The Horses.

The warm autumn weather set the tone for the event with picture-perfect conditions almost too good to be true, as festival goers settled in for an evening of rock.

Dressed in his Jackie Howe, you couldn’t wipe the smile off Gary Roebuck’s face as he, along with thousands of others, was ready to rock out to some of the country’s best rock singers.

Deemed to be one of the biggest music festivals to be held in the Bundaberg Region, Sounds of Rock attendees were keen to listen to iconic Aussie tunes including Eagle Rock, Chained to the Wheel, and The Horses.

It was hard to choose a favourite song, but Gary said he couldn’t wait to hear the tracks he grew up listening to, played here right in his own backyard.

“I am here to see Ross Wilson and Russell Morris,” Gary said.

“They are the guys I came to see. You can’t go wrong with Eagle Rock.”

Local parents Dave and Nicole Hoare grinned gleefully knowing they were in for a night of kid-free fun as the sun set over Burnett Heads and the Sounds of Rock festival lit up for a good time.

“We are so keen for this,” Dave said.

“This is really awesome.”

“We tried to stay at the caravan park, but it was fully booked out and it’s no wonder why,” Nicole said.

What seemed like a dream a year ago turned into an amazing reality as Sounds of Rock organiser Gavin Hales cast his eyes over the massive crowd at the inaugural Sounds of Rock festival.

The memory of small gatherings during the past year was forgotten as thousands filed through the gate to enjoy an evening of some classic Australian rock at Burnett Heads.

What seemed like a dream a year ago turned into an amazing reality as Sounds of Rock organiser Gavin Hales cast his eyes over the massive crowd at the inaugural Sounds of Rock festival.

The Sounds of Rock line up saw a collection of the biggest acts to come to the Bundaberg Region in some time, and included Daryl Braithwaite, The Black Sorrows, Thirsty Merc, Russell Morris, Ross Wilson, The Radiators, and local singer Abby Skye.

Gavin is no stranger to getting people to attend massive events – he was involved with the PBR event in 2019 – but the success of this year’s event shocked even him.

“We were expecting 1500 through the gate, not the 3000 we had at 2pm – we are expecting to get to capacity tonight which is 4000,” Gavin said.

“It’s one of the biggest events Bundy has seen in years; it’s a really good buzz and a really good atmosphere.

“We are really pleased with the turn out, it definitely exceeded expectations.”

The inaugural Sounds of Rock festival was expected to reach full capacity by sunset.

As people were getting prime position to see the stage Gavin was already thinking about next year, and how his team planned on making the event bigger.

“Today is a crash test dummy, a bit of a big one for a crash test dummy though, we just want to get bigger and better,” he said.

“It shows what the community is capable of when they turn out to something like this.”
