Nominations now open for NAIDOC Awards 2021

NAIDOC Awards
The Gin Gin community celebrated NAIDOC Day at a previous celebration in 2019.

The Bundaberg Region community is being urged to get on board with nominations for the 2021 NAIDOC Awards.

The Port Curtis Coral Coast Trust is facilitating the awards which highlight the outstanding achievements of First Nations people within the region.

“Many local Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people contribute to Australian society through music, art, culture, community, education, environment, sport, employment, and politics,” PCCC Trust's Shay Pearce said.

“If you think that someone in your community deserves to recognised for their contribution, then complete the nomination form and tell us why are recognising them for a 2021 NAIDOC Award.

“Anyone can nominate, as long as the nominated person is identified as a First Nations person.”

The awards coincide with National NAIDOC Week, with this year's theme Heal Country! calling for communities to continue to seek greater protections for land, water, sacred sites and cultural heritage from exploitation, desecration, and destruction.

NAIDOC Week is commemorated every year and invites residents to embrace First Nations’ cultural, knowledge and understanding of Country as part of Australia's national heritage and equally respect the culture and values of Aboriginal peoples and Torres Strait Islanders as they do the cultures and values of all Australians.

Shay said nominations for the NAIDOC Awards would close on Tuesday, 18 May before voting begins.

Winners are then announced at the upcoming NAIDOC Ball on Saturday, 10 July.
