Wests Panthers dominate in Sunday game

Ultra-consistent Wests Panthers fullback Brendan Grills is stopped in his tracks by the Past Brothers defence in their Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership clash at Salter Oval on Sunday

Captain and lock Josh Tanner was Man of the Match as Wests Panthers consolidated their lead on the Rugby League Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership table on Sunday.

The team claimed the first piece of BRL silverware up for grabs this season, the Mark Halter Memorial Trophy, with a well executed 26-18 victory over Past Brothers at Salter Oval.

The Trophy is contested each year between the two clubs, perpetuating the memory of a young man who excelled for both clubs during his career but sadly lost his battle with cancer a few years ago.

The Halter family donated the trophy and Mark’s father Trevor was on hand to present it to the Panthers, who had to dig deep against a desperate Brothers side which trailed 10-8 at half-time and pushed them all the way.

Wests are now three points clear at the head of affairs, with Easts Magpies and Hervey Bay Seagulls now sharing second position after the Magpies plucked Wallaroos 34-12 in Maryborough and Waves Tigers made it back-to-back wins, overpowering their hosts Hervey Bay Seagulls 36-8.

Magpies captain, lock and reigning BRL Player of the Year Matt Craven notched his second straight hat-trick of tries and also kicked four goals, while for the Tigers, fullback Layton Chambers amassed 20 points with two tries and a perfect six from six conversions in an also outstanding all-round performance.

In the Northern Districts, hosts Miriam Vale Magpies were caught in the eye of the Avondale Tigers 48-16 to remain without a competition point after five rounds, with Jack West-Combo cutting loose for the defending premiers with three tries.

Meanwhile, South Kolan Sharks savaged Gin Gin Hawks 44-12 in their top of the table shoot-out.

The Hawks however soared high in the Women’s League Tag, shutting out Avondale Hornets 58-0 with captain Jude Bust racking up four tries and Jessica Galea continuing her red-hot form with three.

FOOTBALL

There are now three equal-leaders in the Wide Bay Premier League Men’s division after five teams went into Saturday in a share of top spot, with Across The Waves (ATW), United Park Eagles (UPE) and Fraser Flames now each on 15 points.

Bingera and Brothers-Aston Villa (BAV) had also been up on the top line, but the former were edged out by ATW 3-2 in another epic duel between the two powerhouses on their home-ground, while the latter suffered their second straight heavy defeat, a shock 5-3 loss to their hosts Granville.

UPE put Sunbury Blues to the sword 8-1 with captain Josh Adcock leading the charge with a bag of three goals, and the Flames burnt Doon Villa 2-1.

In the Women’s Premier League, UPE continued their climb up the ladder into second place with superstar Taryn Gollshewsky striking three times in an 8-0 white-wash of Tinana, ATW moving into third place with Tayla Zielke hammering in six goals in a 10-0 blitz of Granville, but Bingera falling victim to KSS Jets 4-1.

AFL: Captain Jason Bethune led from the front with six goals but reigning champions Across The Waves Eagles were soundly beaten by arch-rivals Hervey Bay Bombers 12.12 (84) to 8.3 (51) in their Wide Bay Marquis Macadamias Seniors Premiership clash at Norm McLean Oval on Saturday.

Rookie Callum Neubecker was Best on Ground for the Eagles, but they remain in third place on the ladder behind the unbeaten Bombers and the other Bay side Power, and will need to improve if they are to make it back-to-back flags.

HOCKEY

Veteran Dean Wightman was a match winning hero for Raiders/Rovers, snaring a double to clinch them a shock 3-1 win over Waves Cities in their Bundaberg Division 1 Men’s showdown at Hinkler Park on Saturday.

Four-times defending premiers All Blacks also got the points, bouncing back from a drubbing by Cities a week earlier to edge out Arrows/Athletics 1-0, courtesy of a Tristan Turner goal.

Cities however continued on their Division 1 women’s title defence, pipping Raiders/Rovers 1-0, while All Blacks’ women accounted for Arrows 3-2.
