In celebration of Library and Information Services week, the Bundaberg Library hosted all access pass events to provide visitors the opportunity to take a behind the scenes tour of the library.

The sessions aimed to put a spotlight on the diversity of roles and services available within the library and information profession.

Information Services Librarian at Bundaberg Regional Library Stephen Harris said the events received great feedback from the public and were a chance to showcase all the work that goes into running a library.

“Libraries seem to have a bit of mystery around them and this was a chance to showcase the variety of tasks and opportunities that contribute to the services we provide,” he said.

“The feedback has been amazing and people are certainly surprised when they see what goes into running a library.

“One participant stated that it had blown their mind and they were completely surprised at the level of technical complexity that was behind library processes.”

Stephen said there was plenty of interest in library services that people were not commonly aware of.

“People were very interested in our RFID (radio-frequency identification) technology as well as our 3D Printers and Microfilm readers,” he said.

“Our technology programs were also of interest, especially the hugely popular Gamers Group where participants come to play an assortment of computer games including Minecraft, Among Us and get to experiment with Virtual Reality.”

Bundaberg Regional Council Arts, Culture and Events portfolio spokesperson Cr John Learmonth said the libraries provided a fantastic service to local communities and the event was a great opportunity to showcase the breadth of their service.

“Our libraries do far more than just provide a book rental service for the community, which many people may not be aware of,” he said.

“Giving the community the chance to see what happens behind the scenes was eye opening for everyone and allowed people to leave with a broader understanding of what is available at our libraries.”

The Bundaberg Library has a range of other upcoming events which can be found here.
