Sharks surge ahead in Northern Districts Rugby League

Connor Cole makes a signature blockbusting run for South Kolan Sharks in their Northern Districts Rugby League clash with Miriam Vale Magpies at Tegege on Sunday

South Kolan Sharks continued to sweep all before them in the Northern Districts Rugby League, overpowering the brave but winless Miriam Vale Magpies 40-14 with eight individual try scorers in their seventh-round clash at Tegege on Sunday.

In the match of the day, Avondale Tigers played their hearts out in front of their home crowd, but they went down fighting to second placed Gin Gin 24-16 with flashy centre Maka Taliauli bagging a double for the Hawks.

The Hawks also flew high in the Women’s League Tag, white-washing premiers Avondale Tigers 28-0 with Karrie Hills leading the charge with a two-try haul.

In the Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership League, brothers Sam and Chris Robinson featured prominently in the scoring as Wests Panthers bounced back from their big loss to Wallaroos eight days earlier and shored up top place on the table with a 40-22 victory over cellar dwellers Waves Tigers at Salter Oval on Sunday as the competition reached the half-way point of the season.

Centre Sam bagged a double, while little brother Chris, backing up from a 54-4 romp against a 9-man Past Brothers in under-18, racked up 16 points at fullback with one try and six conversions.

Easts Magpies moved past Wests on the ladder in sentencing hosts Hervey Bay Seagulls to their fourth straight defeat on Saturday 36-18 but the Panthers, who had been missing Chris Robinson, and powerhouse forwards Josh Tanner, Lachlan Patterson and Jared Johnson against Wallaroos and paid the price, losing 32-8, reclaimed No. 1 spot, returning to their best against a brave but outclassed Tigers.

However, after being outright leaders a month ago, the Seagulls dropped down one more position to fourth, overtaken by Brothers, who outgunned Wallaroos 42-22 in the early match on Sunday’s program.

For Easts, after breaking the scoring shackles with a hat-trick against the Tigers a week earlier, multiple Bundaberg Rugby League Leading Try Scorer centre Trent Seeds again wreaked havoc against the Bay, including notching a double, along with high-class halfback Andreas Nona and captain, mercurial five-eighth, and reigning BRL Player of the Year Matthew Craven.

For Brothers, barnstorming five-eighth Zak Bainbridge also had a whale of a game, including amassing 18 points from two tries and five goals in a similar robust team performance, but they built their win on a dominant display by their pack in which second rower Royce Blair and club stalwart front rower Aaron Hall, in his fourth game since coming out of retirement, were absolutely outstanding.

Football

Across The Waves (ATW) and Fraser Flames maintained the joint-lead in the Wide Bay Premier League Men’s division with dominant Round 9 wins over Diggers 6-0 and United Park Eagles (UPE) 4-1respectively at Martens Oval on Saturday.

Nykodah Smith hammered in three goals for Waves to increase his lead in the Golden Boot standings.

Meanwhile, Brothers-Aston Villa (BAV) returned to form with captain Michael Stayte leading from the front in a 6-2 demolition of Bingera, who continued their slide.

UPE however consolidated second place on the Premier League Women’s table with a 2-0 triumph over Bingera.

AFL

Tristan Taylor kicked four goals for Brothers Bulldogs but they remain win-less after 2019 premiers and 2020 beaten grand finalists Bay Power ran away at home to an 18.15 (103) to 5.1 (31) result in the Wide Bay Marquis Macadamias Seniors Premiership on Saturday.

By their win, the Power moved back into second place behind the unbeaten Hervey Bay Bombers, joining premiers Across The Waves Eagles on 20 points, but increasing their percentage lead over them.

Hockey

Lachlan McLennan cut loose with five goals as Waves Cities thrashed four times defending champions All Blacks 8-1 in their Bundaberg Division 1 Men’s showdown at Hinkler Park on Saturday.

Cities’ Division 1 Women also charged on in their title defence with Sarah Quaite a match winner with a double in a 3-1 despatch of All Blacks.

Shauna Mark also doubled up to spearhead Arrows/Athletics’ Women to a 4-0 shut-out of Raiders/Rovers.

Netball

It was business as usual for Waves Gold in their Bundaberg Warren Family Homes Division 1 title defence with a 63-22 thrashing of Natives Magpies at the Superpark on Saturday.

Waves Blue also served it up to Brothers Hurricanes, but fell just short, going down 42-40.
