South school students celebrate NAIDOC Week

Indiara and Hope take part in craft activities to celebrate NAIDOC Week.

Bundaberg South State School students have celebrated NAIDOC Week with a range of events and activities held in the school grounds.

Principal Narelle Clarke said it was an important time to celebrate Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander history, culture and achievements and is an opportunity to recognise the contributions that Indigenous Australians make to the country and society.

“Children and parents who attend Bluey’s Playgroup, which happens every Wednesday of the school term from 9 am to 11 am, created a variety of cultural art pieces, read dreaming stories and even did some face painting,” she said.

“Thursday was the schools culminating celebration day, with students participating in a variety of cultural activities including boomerang painting, animal scratching/painting, Indigenous board games and leaf medicine rubbing.”

Students from Kepnock State High School also attended the celebrations, teaching the younger students cultural dancing and boomerang/spear throwing.

The students enjoyed a sausage sizzle with the celebration ending with the official cake cutting by school captain Koby Gallop, teacher aide Glenda Nigalis and school vice captain Isabella Williams.
