Gin Gin youth and local police officers are gearing up to get down on the dance floor when the second blue light disco takes place in the region soon.
A blue light disco is a drug and alcohol free dance party run by police for local youth and aims to foster community relations and positive interactions within the region.
The event involves dance competitions and games with prizes that have been generously donated by local businesses.
Gin Gin Police Acting Sergeant Luke Handley said after receiving positive feedback about the inaugural blue light disco in April, officers were keen to provide another fantastic event for young people within the community.
“For our first event we received a turnout of over 120 students across all ages and were inundated with positive feedback from both attendees and their parents and guardians,” Act Sgt Handley said.
“We reached out to our local emergency services cadet unit who assisted in the running of a canteen for the evening, with all profits returning to their unit.”
Blue light disco one of many youth events
The blue light disco is one of many activities organised by Gin Gin Police to assist with establishing positive relationships with local youth.
“Since the beginning of 2020 we have held numerous ‘Fun Friday' activities which involves police hosting physical activities for students to become engaged in,” Act Sgt Handley said.
“These events, along with our blue light discos, help to break down barriers and stereotypes and build respect and trust between the community and police.”
Act Sgt Handley said officers were excited to host their second disco for the year this Friday and anticipated the community support would continue to grow following the success of their first event.
The event will be held at the Gin Gin RSL Hall on Friday, 23 July from 5.30pm to 7pm for primary school students and again from 7pm to 9pm for high school students.
