It was an enthralling weekend on the water at Elliott Heads as stand up paddleboarders from across Queensland competed in the 2021 Pulse Electrical Clearwater Classic Race.

Spectators were entertained by the addition of a new technical surf race event on Saturday, before paddlers went the distance in a flatwater race along the Elliott River on Sunday.

It was the second time the 4670 SUP Club Inc event opened to the public, after rave reviews of the success from the previous 2019 race weekend.

Helping to coordinate the 2021 Pulse Electrical Clearwater Classic Race, Paul Stumer said the technical surf race held at the mouth of the Elliott River Elliot Heads had paddlers in several divisions.

Paul said the race was intense, short and swift, and only took about 20-30 minutes to complete, with paddlers bumping into each other.

“It’s one of the harder versions of stand-up racing, so a great spectators sport.”

Paul said technical surf race paddlers were tested as they navigated the waves to make their way around the buoys.

The last Clearwater Classic Race weekend attracted some of the best paddleboarders in the country to the Bundaberg Region, and this year was no different.

There were 42 registered competitors for the technical surf race and 74 registered competitors for short and long course distance races Sunday morning.

“This is the largest SUP tech race and SUP flatwater race in Queensland and possibly Australia in 2021 with the numbers of paddlers,” Paul said.
