The 50th annual Bronze Swagman Bush Poetry Award has been taken out by Bargara local Jan Facey.
The prestigious award from Outback Queensland attracts entries from around Australia and overseas each year.
Jan’s winning poem “Campfire Dreaming” has been published in The Bronze Swagman Book of Bush Verse 2021 – 50th Edition book.
Jan will add the beautiful statuette, designed, and sculptured by Daphne Mayo, to her collection of numerous trophies, medals, and certificates that she has received over the years.
The local poet said she was very excited to win the award, with the competition seeing a very high standard of entries.
“I was so excited to learn of my win as this is such a prestigious competition and I know and admire the work of many of the other brilliant contestants,” Jan said.
“I’ve won many trophies before but the bronze statuette of the swagman is beautifully crafted and one of the best I’ve ever received.”
Previously, Jan has been the Queensland and Australian Bush Poetry Performance Champion, performing around the country covering classical, modern and her own original poetry.
The Bundaberg Poets’ Society invites the community to its meeting which will be held at the Rum City Silver Band Hall to hear a variety of poems, including Jan reciting her newest winning poem on Saturday, 13 November.
It will be an afternoon of entertainment, running from 1.30pm to 4.30pm for just $3.
Anyone is welcome to join or attend to listen or participate.
