Eagles women soar towards minor premiership

eagles women premiership
Ruby Rowlands about to kick a goal for the unbeaten Across The Waves Eagles earlier in the season in the AFL Wide Bay Takalvans Senior Women’s Premiership.

It was a battle but Across The Waves Eagles are just one win away from a second straight unbeaten AFL Wide Bay Takalvans Women’s Senior Premiership minor title after coming from behind to overrun their hosts Bay Power 3.7 (25) to 3.1 (19) in their penultimate round showdown on Saturday.

Power led by one point at quarter-time and extended their advantage to 12 points by the long break, but they were held scoreless in the last two terms as the Eagles dug deep to trail by a solitary point at the last change, then kicked 1.1 in the run home.

With nine wins from as many matches, the Eagles will finish first regardless of the outcome of their home clash this Saturday with minnows Maryborough Bears, who were beaten by fifth placed Brothers Bulldogs 9.15 (69) to nil last weekend, while four-times defending champions Hervey Bay Bombers held on to second place ahead of Gympie Cats on percentages despite losing to them on Saturday.

In the Marquis Macadamias Senior Men’s Premiership fourth round on Saturday, reigning champions Bombers held on to defeat their hosts, the also previously unbeaten Bulldogs 7.7 (49) to 5.8 (38) after putting their stamp on the game with a 4.0 to 1.1 first quarter.

But the traditionally strong Eagles’ Men remain anchored to the bottom of the ladder with a point to their credit so far after being outgunned by their hosts Power 9.7 (61) to 4.12 (38) with their inaccuracy again their Achilles heel.

RUGBY LEAGUE

Lethal fullback Trent Seeds cut loose with a hat-trick of tries as 2021 bridesmaids Easts Magpies moved back to the top of the Bundaberg Broadcasters A Grade Premiership table with a 46-30 blitz of two-times defending champions Past Brothers in their fourth-round blockbuster at Salter Oval on Saturday night.

While they were celebrating returning to the head of affairs, it was also a good night for the “Big Cats” with Waves Tigers moving into equal-second position with Hervey Bay Seagulls with wingers Jensen Deamer and Delai Moto each notching doubles in a 40-6 demolition of the hapless Wallaroos in the earlier game on the program.

Wests Panthers also purred to their first win of the season, displacing their hosts Seagulls from poll position with classy lock Shaun Ezzy also notching a double in a 38-24 ambush at Stafford Park.

In the Northern Districts Men’s second round at Tegege on Sunday, club stalwart front row battering ram and captain Jacobb Olive led from the front with a double as South Kolan Sharks powered on in their title defence with a 44-20 demolition of last year’s bridesmaids Gin Gin Hawks in their second-round battle.

Meanwhile, Ricky Noy came off the bench to rack up four tries as Miriam Vale Magpies improved on their narrow-first-up defeat at the hands of Sharks to put Avondale Tigers to the sword 50-12.

Avondale however accounted for Agnes Water Marlins 22-14 in the Women’s League Tag.

FOOTBALL

Just over one year since their previous loss in the competition, hosts Across The Waves suffered a shock defeat in the Football Queensland Premier League Wide Bay Men’s division on Saturday, with Brad Mitchell a two-goal hero for Fraser Flames as they maintained their perfect season record in four matches with a 2-1 boil-over.

The bubble also burst for fellow Bundaberg heavyweights United Park Eagles as they gave up the joint-lead on the ladder with an also boilover 2-1 defeat by their hosts Doon Villa.

Bingera was the only Bundaberg Premier Men’s side to win on the day, overpowering Sunbury Blues 7-4 with journeyman Michael Stayte striking four times and their Golden Boot of the past three years Gary O’Donnell notching a hat-trick.

Waves were also beaten by the Flames 5-1 in the Wide Bay Women’s League, while Diggers, in their first season in the competition, posted their maiden victory with a Kalani Irwin double leading them home against United Warriors 6-4.

HOCKEY

Bundaberg Hockey Division 1 Men’s and Women title holders Waves Cities gained revenge for their first-round losses to arch-rivals All Blacks, beating them 7-2 and 1-0 respectively in fourth round action at Hinkler Park on Saturday.

Lachlan McLennan and Matthew Quaite, whose families have both been champions of the club for many years, each struck twice for their Men

Raiders/Rovers blunted Arrows/Athletics 3-0 in the other Division 1 Women’s match up.

NETBALL

It was business as usual for victors of the past two seasons Waves Gold as they outgunned their Blue club-mates 54-19 in their Warren Family Homes Division 1 Premiership duel at the Superpark on Saturday.

But Natives Aim Hearing Magpies, who lost to Gold by just eight points in the previous round before the Easter break, were no match for Alloway Blue, going down 45-31.
