Show celebrates 40 years of Possum Magic

Moo Baa Theatre Company brings the world of Possum Magic to life.

Monkey Baa Theatre Company is set to return to Bundaberg with its award-winning stage show, Possum Magic.

The beloved children’s book by Mem Fox and Julia Vivas turns 40 this year and young audiences can celebrate by watching the pages come to life with two performances at the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre on 14 July.

The production uses a clever combination of action, magic, soundscape, puppetry and animation to create the whimsical world of Grandma Poss.

Watch as she casts a spell to make Hush invisible and join their adventure to make him visible again.

Associate Producer at Monkey Baa Theatre Company Emma Khamis said the show was full of fun.

“It’s a joyous, magical adventure that is both thought provoking and hilarious,” she said.

“I think the magic is universally loved.

“The story is now 40 years old, so generations know it and love it.”

Emma said that ultimately this classic story was about a grandmother and her grandchild learning to trust in each other.

“The story is iconic, and the play has extended on its magical beauty to delve into the fear of a grandparent trying to protect her grandchild and keep her safe from a snake,” she said.

“Young people know the book so well and it’s joyous for us to hear them yell out ‘wow!’ when they see the characters come to life on stage, especially when Grandma Poss does her magic.”

She said Monkey Baa always had the hearts and minds of young people at the forefront of their vision.

“We respect young people, and we create our works with young people so that what we deliver to our audiences is relevant to them, thought provoking and joyous,” she said.

“To create and present works like Possum Magic for regional audiences is a huge privilege and we are eternally grateful to be able to do what we love”.
