The 2024 Bundaberg Relay For Life event on Saturday 20 July will see community members support the Cancer Council Queensland and rally together to raise awareness and unite against cancer.

Cancer Council research reveals that by 2030 more than 350,000 Queenslanders will be living with cancer, with nearly 2,000 living in the Wide Bay Burnett region diagnosed each year and more than 600 dying from the disease each year.

Relay For Life is a Cancer Council Queensland initiative, bringing together Queensland communities to support those who have been impacted by cancer, whilst celebrating cancer survivorship and honouring lost ones.

Bundaberg can expect an action-packed day where teams of people will be keeping a baton moving in a relay style walk, run or roll for 8.5 hours to support those touched by cancer.

Relay for Life is an event for everyone – no matter your age, or fitness level, you can get involved and make a difference.

This year the Bundaberg Relay for Life Committee is aiming to raise $150,000.

All donations raised through Relay for Life help life-saving cancer research, prevention programs and support services to ensure no Queenslander is left navigating cancer alone.

In 2023 alone, donations provided more than 25,000 nights’ accommodation for cancer patients and their carers, counselling for more than 800 people and free wigs and turbans for more than 3,000 people.

Bundaberg local legend Paul Nunn has been named the official face of the 2024 Bundaberg Relay For Life event.

Paul has been diagnosed with cancer twice with melanoma at age 55 and prostate cancer aged 64.

He has been heavily involved in community activities for a long time and supporting Cancer Council Queensland was a natural fit as he is committed to helping others.

“I like talking to others about my experiences, especially those who have been recently diagnosed,” Paul said.

Today, Paul enjoys living life to the fullest every day, whilst working on staying as fit and healthy as he can, staying positive and spending time with family and friends.

For him, having that support was extremely important.

“Cancer diagnosis for an individual has far reaching consequences,” Paul said.

“It’s important to share your thoughts and accept the support of those who love you.”
