Children are encouraged to step into their favourite story this Book Week as businesses and community groups get ready to Paint Gin Gin REaD.
In celebration of Book Week from 17 to 23 August, there will be over 35 different displays to discover at sites across Gin Gin inspired by children’s books.
As part of the event, a Paint it REaD Book Week competition will be held for children aged up to 15, challenging them to visit as many displays as possible.
Participants can list the theme of each display they’ve visited and enter their completed forms at the Gin Gin Community Hub before 31 August to be entered into the prize draw.
They can also vote for their favourite display with a perpetual trophy awarded to the winners to proudly showcase until next year’s book week.
Arts, Heritage and Asset Management portfolio spokesperson Cr John Learmonth said Paint Gin Gin REaD’s Book Week was a wonderful way for the community to raise awareness of the importance of reading with children.
“This joint celebration of reading was first launched in 2022 and soon became a community favourite,” Cr Learmonth said.
“It is a great way for local businesses to get involved in sharing stories and creating a little bit of magic for the young readers in our region.
“The staff at the Gin Gin Community Hub will also be dressing up, so make sure to stop by and visit them too.”
Paint Gin Gin REaD is a community-wide initiative aimed at enhancing early literacy among children in the Gin Gin region, supported by the Gin Gin Early Years Network.
This Book Week event is made possible through the collaboration and support of Bundaberg Regional Libraries, the Queensland Government’s Department of Communities, Housing and Digital Economy, and Early Childhood Education and Care.
