This year’s Seniors Month, themed Love Getting Older In Queensland, will be a walk in the park to help celebrate the region’s older generation.
Community members of all ages are welcome to celebrate as Bundaberg Regional Council, in partnership with Wide Bay Health and Hospital Service, Bundaberg Neighbourhood Centre and Do Your Thing, host a Seniors Walk of Life event.
Seniors Walk of Life will be held in Boreham Park from 9 am on 24 October and it aims to highlight the importance of falls prevention and staying active at every stage of life.
October 1 is International Older Persons Day and this year Council is shining a light on combating ageism.
Ageism refers to the stereotypes and prejudice towards others or oneself based on age.
Throughout October everyone is invited to join in celebrating older adults and combating ageism through an exciting initiative called The Wall.
The Wall will provide a dedicated space for people to express their appreciation for their current stage in life.
Community Resilience and Connection portfolio spokesperson Cr Tracey McPhee said The Wall project was an opportunity to share the message of support across all age groups.
“Launching on International Older Persons Day, this campaign encourages individuals of all ages to share what they value most about their current age, highlighting the positive contributions older people make to our community,” Cr McPhee said.
“Ageism can significantly affect how older adults are perceived and treated.
“It’s crucial to remember that age is something we all encounter in life.
“With kindness and respect, we can ensure that every individual, regardless of age, is valued for their contributions and experiences.
“Through The Wall, we aim to challenge these stereotypes and create a space where everyone can appreciate the richness of their current age.”
