A number of severe weather warnings have preceded the launch of this year’s Get Ready Queensland Week in a timely reminder for Bundaberg Region residents to be prepared.
Get Ready Queensland (GRQ) is a year-round, all hazards, resilience building initiative of the Queensland Government to help communities prepare for natural disasters.
Get Ready Queensland Week is marked from 8 – 13 October 2024.
Local Disaster Management Group (LDMG) Chair Mayor Helen Blackburn said it was important that every household had a plan in place should disaster strike.
“Locals know all too well the devastating impacts severe weather can have which is why we’d like to see every single household make an emergency plan to be ready for anything, from bushfires and heatwaves to flooding, storms or cyclones,” Mayor Blackburn said.
“It doesn’t matter if you’re a long-time local or a new resident or if you’re an owner or a renter, everyone needs a plan.”
Emergency plans include considerations for how households will cope if access to services like water and power are unavailable or access to schools and work are limited and even where pets will go if evacuation is required.
Make an emergency plan
Get Ready Queensland has launched an online emergency plan tool at plan.getready.qld.gov.au which allows users to enter their postcode and then follow the prompts to prepare a plan specific to the severe weather risks for their area.
Resources and information to Get Ready are also available on Bundaberg Regional Council’s disaster dashboard at disaster.bundaberg.qld.gov.au.
Take part in Get Ready Queensland Week
As part of Get Ready Queensland Week Bundaberg Regional Council’s Disaster Management unit will host drop-in sessions at the Bundaberg Bunnings on Johanna Boulevard to provide one-on-one advice to residents about how to prepare for storm season.
Residents can stop by the Council stand, which will be located inside Bunnings at the café, at any time between 9 am and 12 pm this Thursday 10 October, Friday 11 October and Saturday 12 October to speak directly with a member of the Disaster Management team.
They will have Get Ready resources on hand and can answer any questions residents have about being more prepared.
