Beach report: mixed week of weather

Wobbly and choppy conditions caused by a mixed week of weather across the region is set to continue today and into the weekend.
In this week’s beach report, Craig Holden advises that choppy and wobbly conditions will continue.

Wobbly and choppy conditions caused by a mixed week of weather across the region is set to continue today and into the weekend.

Weather

Well, it’s been a bit of a mixed week of weather across the local region throughout this past week, with moderate onshore winds, scattered showers and milder temperatures – and looking ahead to today and then across the weekend, not too much is expected to change.

We are expecting more of the same with moderate onshore winds, scattered showers and mild temperatures set to continue.

This morning’s winds will continue from the E/SE at around 10 to 15 knots before they increase slightly through this afternoon to 15+ knots.

Tomorrow morning will then be quite similar with E/SE winds at 10 to 15 knots, before the winds become stronger through the afternoon at 15 to 20 knots. Sunday will then hopefully see those winds ease back slightly to be 10 to 15 knots from the E/SE.

Swimming

Swimming conditions have been much like the weather this past week – mixed – with mostly choppy, sloppy and wobbly conditions across most beaches.

Unfortunately, too, the outlook for the weekend is much the same with moderate E/SE winds set to provide more wobbly and sloppy conditions across most beaches, but particularly those open and exposed beaches.

There will also be a slight side sweep or current pushing along those open beaches from south to north as well.

For the best swimming conditions hit the beaches in the mornings – through until mid-morning or soon after while the tide is high and the winds slightly lighter.

With the full moon tonight, beach goers can expect large morning high tide heights in the today and tomorrow so just be cautious during the outgoing stage of the tide when there will be extra water movement.

Please check with the Lifesavers or Lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages, AND most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

Beach patrols

Today – 9 am to 5 pm at Kelly’s Beach and Agnes Water only.

Saturday – 9 am to 5pm at Kelly’s Beach, Nielson Park, Oaks Beach and Agnes Water, 1 pm to 5pm at Elliott Heads and Moore Park Beach.

Sunday – 9 am to 5 pm at Elliott Heads, Kelly’s Beach, Nielson Park, Oaks Beach, Moore Park Beach and Agnes Water.

Surfing

Local board-riders have again been enjoying some fun-sized waves about local beaches during this past week, but these waves have been wind-affected and quite wobbly and choppy thanks to the onshore winds.

With the forecast for the coming days remaining the same, we can expect more of the same too – fun-sized waves but they will be sloppy and wobbly, so the key will be to find some protection from those onshore winds in the hope of securing a few cleaner ones to enjoy.

Agnes Water, Nielson Park, Mon Repos and Moore Park will likely be the better options. Good Luck.

For the SUP and Ocean Ski paddlers chasing a downwind paddle, there will be enough wind over the coming days for a south to north run, but it will be quite sloppy and wobbly, and hard to line up the runs due to the E/SE winds.

For those chasing a more relaxed and gentler paddle there will not be much joy early – maybe hit the beaches through the very early mornings to escape the winds, or else head to the protected inland waterways.
