Fairymead House tour
Fairymead House is offering guided tours every Tuesday during Australian Heritage Festival celebrations.

Discover more about the fascinating history of Fairymead House with guided tours every Tuesday during Australian Heritage Festival.

The festival, this year themed ‘Unearthed’, will be held around Australia from 18 April to 18 May 2025.

Built in 1890 for Ernest and Margaret Young, then owners of the Fairymead Sugar Mill, Fairymead House was an imposing private residence.

The building was donated to the city of Bundaberg by Bundaberg Sugar in 1988 and carefully transported to its current location in the picturesque Bundaberg Botanic Gardens.

Bundaberg Regional Council’s Arts and Heritage portfolio spokesperson Councillor John Learmonth said the tours would give visitors intriguing insights into the history of the home and its former residents.

“The interior of the house is largely unchanged since its construction, showcasing beautiful colonial architectural elements,” Cr Learmonth said.

“Through our knowledgeable guides, visitors will learn about the history of Bundaberg’s sugar industry and the Young family’s rise to prominence.”

Rooms within Fairymead House have been furnished to reflect their original use and contain a series of displays illustrating the lifestyle during the time of the Young family.

Councillor Learmonth said the nearby ‘Swaggie Tree’ was also worth visiting while in the gardens.

“It’s a beautiful historic fig tree, estimated to be 500 to 600 years old,” Cr Learmonth said.

“Known as the ‘Swaggie Tree’, it was reported to have sheltered Bundaberg’s last swagman as he passed through the area in the 1950s.”
