Bundaberg Regional Council will soon begin a refurbishment project on the amenities block at Nielson Park, Bargara – marking Stage 1 of broader works planned for the area.
The refurbishment is set to begin in early May, with temporary amenities to be provided to ensure continued access for beachgoers during the works.
Environment and Natural Resources portfolio spokesperson Cr Jason Bartels said the upgrade was a key step in improving the experience for locals and visitors to the area.
“Nielson Park is one of our region’s favourite beachside destinations, and this refurbishment will help ensure its facilities are modern, clean, safe and user-friendly,” Cr Bartels said.
“These works are being timed to be undertaken over the cooler months to minimise impact on the public and will happen outside of the surf lifesaving season.”
The refurbishment will transform the existing toilet block into a more modern, energy-efficient, and accessible facility.
Planned works include:
• New accessible toilets and showers
• Upgraded drainage and waterproofing
• Energy-efficient features and rainwater collection
• Anti-vandal and easy-clean finishes
• Improved access pathways
• A fresh, modern look inside and out
Cr Bartels said Council had considered both environmental impact and community needs when planning the upgrade.
“Importantly, the refurbishment has been designed to minimise impact on the coastal environment, including reducing light pollution near the beach and turtle nesting areas,” he said.
“We’re making sure the new amenities are not only practical and attractive but also respectful of the park’s natural beauty and important role in local wildlife conservation.”
The project is part of Council’s long-term vision to enhance public spaces across the region and encourage healthy, outdoor lifestyles.
Funding on this project was made possible by the Queensland Government – Minor Infrastructure and Inclusive Facilities Fund.
Currently when you walk in to the men’s area it’s like entering a dark dungeon.
Please include natural roof lighting or something similar to light up this area in daylight hours.
I’ve never been in there when the floor is dry.
It has a constant musky smell at present
Should really resurface the skate rink next to it at the same time. As its popularity is growing and it’s full of cracks. Also so yellow lights which other beaches use along walkways so it is not so dark for people to have night walks. Throughout that area.
With the disabled facilities there at Nielsen park mixer taps would be good easier to use, hooks in toilets to hang up bags etc ,swing doors that go both ways and toilet paper holder above the toilet 🚽 as well as beside it to help carers to assist that person when needed.
