Funding secured for road safety improvements

The Targo and George Street intersection will benefit from the recent round of Black Spot Project funding to improve safety.

In a major win for road safety, Bundaberg Regional Council has secured full funding for six high-priority projects under the Federal Government’s 2025–26 Black Spot Program.

With more than $4 million allocated across the region, the newly funded projects aim to address known crash sites and enhance road safety for motorists, cyclists, and pedestrians.

Mayor Helen Blackburn said Bundaberg Regional Council continued to be one of Queensland’s most successful Black Spot Program applicants, both in terms of application success rate and total funding secured in recent years.

She added the funding commitment from the program was vital to Council’s ongoing road safety efforts.

“We’re incredibly proud to continue our extremely high success rate in Black Spot funding applications,” Mayor Blackburn said.

“These upgrades are targeted, data-driven responses to areas with a history of crashes.

“The improvements funded under the 2025–26 program will make some of our most problematic intersections significantly safer for all road users.

“Securing this funding means Council can deliver these important safety improvements without placing additional strain on our budget – and that’s a win for our community.”

Projects funded under the 2025–26 Black Spot Program:

Maynard Street / Maryborough Street, Walkervale – $158,500

Installation of speed reduction devices on each approach to the roundabout.

Maryborough Street / Electra Street, Bundaberg Central – $340,000

Traffic signal upgrade to primarily improve safety for pedestrians.

Maynard Street / Kensington and Miller Streets, Norville – $376,000

Kensington Street intersection converted to left-in only. Channelised right turn lane and raised safety platform at Miller Street.

• Targo Street / George Street, Bundaberg Central – $1,334,500

Installation of raised pedestrian crossings on all legs, upgraded lighting, path widening, and vegetation clearing.

Maryborough Street / George Street, Bundaberg Central – $802,500

Traffic signal upgrade to primarily improve safety for pedestrians. Extension of footpath on western side of Maryborough Street.

Branyan Street / Crofton Street, Norville – $990,500

Reconfigure intersection into a single-lane roundabout with raised pedestrian crossings and kerb extensions, improving sightlines and pedestrian safety.

About the Black Spot Program:

The Black Spot Program improves road safety and helps prevent serious injuries and deaths on roads.

Black Spot projects target dangerous road locations where crashes are occurring or are at risk of occurring.

The Australian Government provides funding for treatments such as traffic signals and roundabouts at Black Spots, reducing the risk of crashes.

  1. The speed bumps that have already been put in place do nothing to slow the traffic , the intersection at Commercial and Production by Autobarn has only made it more difficult to cross or turn at these intersections, if engineers went to university for 6 years to come up with this remedy , i personally think we need to seek other advice into these matters before more money is wasted

  2. Pretty soon, we will be able to bounce our way around the near city area. We can dodge airborne e-scooters and their airborne riders as they overtake the slowing cars. More fun than the dodge’ems.

  3. When you crush the entrance and exits to round abouts you often make it much less safe for push bike and scooter riders. Placing random lumps and bumps over roads and intersections is not likely to improve safety, particularly for 2 wheeled vehicles.
These painted lumps, bumps and crushes are generally quite visible during the day but can be quite dangerous on a wet night, when most of the paint is worn off.

  4. barolin street n burnett st intersection needs traffic light

for 2 years i saw or heard about 3-4 times car accidents

many traffics in front of south side shopping centre
n kepknock area mainroad from united petrol station

  5. The T intersection at Watson Road and Woongarra Scenic Drive is dangerous and needs reviewing. If you are in Watsons Road it is almost a blind turn into Woongarra Scenic Drive.

  6. They need to formally mark extra lanes and shrink the roundabout at the Norville Pool roundabout to help the shalom school traffic. People used to very efficiently create their own turn left lane to go down enterprise st and it helped greatly, but last year council painted lines to stop that and it’s made it a million times worse. That intersection is large enough for extra lanes, so they should put them in. especially with the new hospital and more edenbrook, kay mcduff drive development, it’s going to end up being gridlock all day.
