The annual Neighbourhood Watch Community Fun Day is promising a relaxed and fun few hours for the whole family this Saturday as it draws together emergency services and other community-based organisations.

With support of Bundaberg Regional Council, the annual event has moved to Alexandra Park West on Quay Street this year, in an effort to be more visible and to allow families plenty of space to spend time together engaging with stallholders.

Event Committee Chair Kelvin Rowland is hoping for a big turnout of locals so that they can find out more about the role the organisation has in local crime prevention strategies.

“This day is all about raising the profile of Neighbourhood Watch in the community” he said.

“Our organisation is grounded in the community and have a variety of suburban groups across Bundaberg that empower locals to get to know their neighbours, look out for one another and also to offer a way of meeting other people from within the neighbourhood”.

Neighbourhood Watch QLD is an official crime prevention program of the Queensland Police Service and has evolved since its establishment in the 1980s from just detecting and preventing crime to being an outlet for the community to work with Police and other stakeholders on local problems in their neighbourhoods.

The Neighbourhood Watch Community Fun Day will have games for all ages to engage in, face painting, displays and stalls from community groups like Lions, SU Chaplaincy and more.

There will also be coffee and food available for purchase.

Mr Rowland encourages locals to come down to the park and soak up the sunshine and the atmosphere.

“We just want families to enjoy the atmosphere, so we’ve tried to add things like live local entertainment that includes one of Bundaberg’s Oldest Music Groups – the Caledonian Pipe Band and the always popular Kalkie State School Drum Band,” he said.

“This will add to the games and the Emergency Services Displays that little kids and big kids alike enjoy.”

The event runs from 9 am until 2 pm at the Tallon Bridge end of Alexandra Park.
