Beach report: cool, wet conditions continue

Well, it has been a windy old week across the local region, with moderate to strong S/SE to E/SE winds, and a few scattered showers.
Craig Holden, advises the cool and wet weather will continue for the next few days.

Well, it has been a mixed bag of weather conditions this week, with beautiful and warm conditions through Monday and Tuesday before overcast skies and cooler temperatures arrived from Wednesday/Thursday along with some rain yesterday too.

There will be more cool and wet conditions expected through today and tomorrow, before the sun returns on Sunday (or maybe even by Saturday afternoon).

This morning’s winds will be light and from the S/SW at 5 to 10 knots before swinging from the S/SE this afternoon at 10+ knots.

The winds will then increase a little more across the weekend with S/SE to E/SE winds forecast for tomorrow at 10 to 15 knots, and gusting to 15+ knots through the late afternoon.

Sunday will then bring more S/SE to E/SE winds at 15+ knots. Maximum temperatures will hover around only 19 to 20 degrees today and tomorrow as well, before the sun warms things up a little more through Sunday.

Swimming

Swimming conditions have been pretty good once again during this past week, with mostly calm and mild ocean conditions, with just some choppier conditions through Tuesday, with the ocean temperature still remaining quite mild.

These good swimming conditions will continue through today while the winds are light and slightly offshore – you will just need to tolerate the overcast skies and forecast of rain!

Then across the weekend, as the onshore winds increase, we can expect choppier conditions to develop and especially on those open and exposed beaches.

With this in mind, the best time for swimmers to hit the beach will be through the mornings while the winds are lighter, but it will be low tide unfortunately.

If you are chasing the high tide conditions though, you will need to wait until late morning to early afternoon.

All beaches will be pretty good today, despite the gloomy weather, but across the weekend, beaches such as Agnes Water, Hervey Bay, Nielson Park and Moore Park will be the better options.

Please check with the Lifeguard on duty, read any safety signage or messages, AND most importantly please swim only at patrolled beaches, only between the red and yellow flags, and only during patrol times – remember, if we can’t see you, we can’t save you!

Beach patrols

Today and weekdays – 9 am to 5 pm at Agnes Water ONLY

Saturday and Sunday – 9 am to 5 pm at Kelly’s Beach and Agnes Water ONLY

Surfing

Local board-riders were enjoying plenty of small, but clean and fun waves through Monday and Tuesday this week, but the wave heights did drop quickly from about Wednesday onwards.

For today and tomorrow, you may still be able to find some very small, clean waves through the mornings that will only suit the longboards and SUP’s, but across the weekend we should then see a slight increase in wave heights through Saturday afternoon into Sunday.

It will be a little choppier by then, but hopefully the wave heights are slightly bigger.

Try the usual locations and probably best through the mornings too.

Good Luck.

For the SUP and Ocean Ski paddlers, there should be enough wind for a south to north downwind run tomorrow and Sunday, but for those chasing a more gentle and relaxed paddle, hit the beach today or again tomorrow morning early.
