A taste of Summer in Winter. Summer McBride enthusiastically leads her Aqua Zumba class at the Isis Memorial Swimming Pool.

It really is a case of Summer warming up winter with Zumba instructor Summer McBride putting classes through their paces at the Childers pool.

Glorious water temperatures all year round are encouraging the residents of Childers and district to enjoy social and organised activities at the Isis War Memorial Pool.

Pool manager Shelley Whitaker said Aqua Zumba and Aqua Aerobics classes were proving exceptionally popular with participants enjoying the social and health benefits of the exercise.

According to Shelley, the heated Childers pool is the reason locals can continue to enjoy year-round water-based activities like Zumba and Aerobics.

“Our Learn To Swim classes are also resuming and numbers are certainly growing for that activity,” Shelley said.

“With the water a delightful 28 degrees who wouldn’t want to use the local pool during the colder months.

“Normally we would have shut down the pool’s operation towards the end of April and reopened around September.

“Local residents through their great support are acknowledging the long overdue need for a facility of this nature in Childers.”

Shelley said numbers in January this year were staggering with attendance up by 2300 for the month.

“There may have had a novelty factor through the pool just being opened but numbers have remained excellent with at lease 60 people per day using the facility,” she said.

“Council gets a huge thumbs-up from the community for this initiative which has not only extended the use of the pool through heating but also added another layer of sun safety through providing the pool with a cover.

“It never ceases to amaze me during the summer months how many people comment on the benefits of not having to use sunscreen or cover up with rashies and the like. The roof provides superb all-weather protection.”

Regular pool user Tony Elton checks the pool temperature which is a balmy 28 degrees. Tony loves his morning swim at the pool three times a week.

Local couple Tony Elton, now in his 80s, and Dilys Griffiths use the pool for exercise three times per week.

Tony said he fully endorsed health benefits of regular swimming.

“We look forward to our morning swim and you certainly cannot complain about the quality of this facility,” he said.

Shelley said managing the pool on a year-round basis added to the viability of the management rights which she and her husband Hayden hold for three years.

“We will look to close for one month, just to have a bit of a break and undertake any required maintenance,” Shelley said.

“That will most likely be in July next year.”

The Isis War Memorial Pool is open through the week from 6am until 6pm and on Saturday 10am until 5pm and Sunday 11am until 5pm.
