Waterloo Hall to host Bush Dance

Festival of Small Halls Waterloo Hall
Guests enjoyed a night under the stars and fairy lights at the Festival of Small Halls at Waterloo Hall in 2022.

The Waterloo Hall will come alive with music and dancing on 10 May for a Bush Dance event celebrating community and local history.

Waterloo Hall committee president Shirley Galea shares details about the event:

Can you provide an overview of the event and what it’s in aid of?

Last year the community rallied to save the Waterloo Hall from sale due to being deemed surplus to requirements.

We want to celebrate what this beautiful old hall means to our community, and all of the history it holds, and what better time than during the Australian Heritage Festival!

The hall has been an emergency hub during natural disasters and has seen countless dances, weddings, music festivals, ANZAC services and community gatherings.

It holds 114 years of stories and secrets that we want to unearth and share with the wider community.

How does this event benefit the local community?

This dance brings people together for a night of fun, to learn some dancing, catch up with friends and boogie the night away.

There’s no age barrier to dancing, it’ll be a night for everyone.

An event like this affirms the Hall as a cornerstone public asset, invaluable to the Waterloo community and cherished by people throughout the Bundaberg Region.

How can community members get involved or support the event?

The event will kick off from 6 pm at the Waterloo Hall on Waterloo Hall Road.

Tickets are available from Humanitix.

Food and drinks will be available for purchase on the night.

Are there any local businesses or organisations partnering with you for this event?

The Yandaran Rural Fire Brigade are putting on a fundraiser barbecue dinner, we have local line dancing teachers from Childers Country Line Dancing and the popular local band Smooth Velvet to entertain.

We’ve got the full support of the Bundaberg Regional Heritage Group (BRHG) who are a remarkable team of community-minded locals doing their utmost to protect and honour the history of our region.

BRHG was critical in helping to save the hall in 2024.

What is the history of this event?

The Waterloo Hall has hosted numerous community dances over its 114 year history, and although there have been many special events held in recent years, community dances at local halls are few and far between.

We hope to revive the passion for simply getting together for a night of fun, and at the same time celebrate the halls continued presence in our community.
