Queensland author J Mary Masters will visit Bundaberg next week for an author talk to promote her latest book Price to Pay.
The author talk will take place at Bundaberg Library on Tuesday 20 May from 10 to 11.30 am and is free to attend with bookings required here.
Masters writes engaging stories for a predominantly female readership with her four-part Belleville series set in Central Queensland during World War II, followed by a two-book spin off series focused on one of the main characters, Philippe Duval.
Masters said that, while each book can be read as a stand-alone story, readers would find it the most rewarding to follow the family story from the very beginning.
“I find that rural and regional women especially identify with the settings of the Belleville novels, while my city-based readers have been delighted by the change of pace of the urban settings of the two Philippe Duval novels,” she said.
“The characters feel like friends to many readers, who become emotionally invested in the choices, good and bad, that they make.”
Masters said she would discuss the inspiration behind her storytelling and could also answer basic questions about publishing and other aspects of writing a book.
“When I’m talking to a library audience, I like to talk about what inspired me to write my books,” she said.
“But I also want to inspire audience members who feel they too can write a book.
“It’s never too late to start.”
The author talk comes just as one of Masters’ first books, Julia’s Story, has been made available as an audio book and will also be available in large print format later this year.
“The public library network is a marvellous resource throughout Australia,” she said.
“I believe readers should support Australian authors.
“I think we should be proud of our storytellers.
“I think too it’s great to read a book with a familiar setting not to mention a familiar way of life.
“We have some outstanding writers.
“I urge readers to support the writers telling our stories.”
