Community to come together for NAIDOC event

IWC’s dedicated staff are leading this year’s NAIDOC Block Party, a vibrant, free community celebration proudly run by the community, for the community.

Held at the Bundaberg Recreational Precinct on Wednesday 9 July from 11 am to 2 pm, the event will bring people together through culture, connection and creativity.

Guided by this year’s NAIDOC theme, The Next Generation: Strength, Vision and Legacy, IWC staff are stepping forward not just to host an event, but to share culture in ways that are real, hands-on and welcoming to all.

“This event is about more than celebration; it’s about connection with our culture and community,” IWC Managing Director Robert Skeen said.

“Our staff are bringing their knowledge, stories and traditions forward so that everyone can take part, learn, and feel welcome.”

The Block Party will feature a line-up of cultural performances, a variety of stalls with immersive activities designed for all ages, plus free hot tukka and warm drinks to keep you going through the day.

Children can get creative painting and playing their own clapsticks, pot a native seed to take home and grow and learn cultural symbols that they can paint on the pots or make sand art.

Older kids and teens can jump into basketball games collaborated with PCYC or take on IWC staff in a friendly shootout.

For those seeking a quieter space, the Bundaberg Library team and Story Dogs will host a calm zone for storytelling and reading.

Special guest Aunty Jenny – this year’s winner of the Premier’s Local Legend Award – will share stories that connect culture, Country and community.

Every detail of the day has been thoughtfully shaped by IWC staff and partners, bringing community together as one to honour culture and embrace the next generation.

Whether you’re local or visiting, Indigenous or non-Indigenous, young or old – this day is for you.

Come along, bring your friends and family, and be part of something that reminds us all of the strength that lives in sharing.
