Church of Christ Bundaberg will be hosting a free community Christmas lunch for those who will be alone this festive season.

Organiser Peter MacSween said the event, held on Christmas Day, was now in its fifth year and stemmed from his own feelings of isolation during a difficult time.

“Back in 1983 I spent Christmas by myself and it was the loneliest day of my life,” he said.

“It really hit me and I felt for those people who had to go through that feeling all of the time – I still do.

“Until you go through the pangs of loneliness you can never truly understand how heartbreaking it is.”

Hundreds of people turn out for lunch event

Peter said each year more than 200 people had participated in the Christmas feast, which featured a three-course meal and lots of fun.

Peter MacSween said the lunch was aimed at making sure no one was left lonely over the holiday period.

“We organise our church bus for transport for those who can’t get to us,” he said.

“Then, we have a delicious three-course-meal for lunch and drinks on arrival.”

Peter said although the event was a lot of work to organise, it was a job he and the committee kept coming back for more of every year.

“We don’t like the thought of people being alone on Christmas,” he said.
