The first online play reading by Bundaberg Players via Zoom was an international affair, according to Artistic Director Bex Hutchins.

“The initial play reading was a great success,” Bex said.

“Around 20 people were in the reading, including some from Darwin, Melbourne, even the UK, and, of course, locals.

“Everyone enjoyed both the concept and the play that was chosen.

“I’m sure the playwright found it a very useful tool to develop her play further.

The play was an original work “A Word in Private” by local playwright (and Bundaberg Players’ Treasurer) Jan Sullivan.

Jan said it was great to see her words come to life, even if it was online.

“I think it went well given the readings were unrehearsed and the characters didn't move on a stage,” Jan said.

“The Players are very professional.

“It was great to connect with people in these isolated days, and to have a common interest of theatre to share a special bond.”

Jan said the feedback was invaluable.

“I got some very helpful feedback as the play needs a rewrite and the performers gave valuable suggestions about how I can make the story and character arcs stronger,” Jan said.

“I also got some great input on how I can make it into a ‘proper play' that goes long enough to give people a night out at the theatre.”

And what’s next for Jan, who has been writing for around 15 years?

“A rewrite – if only I had plenty of time stuck at home with nowhere much to go,” Jan quipped

Bundaberg Players’ first foray into zoom play reading won’t be their last.

“I think we can have fun with this platform, and explore different styles and genres,” Bex said.

“As long as the demand is there, I will provide a play to read.

“I will be looking at another session on the 26 May, this time a fun radio play.

“People will need to register for this the day before so I can allocate sound effects to certain people.

“Of course the option is still there to just be the audience, they are valuable too!”

Anyone wanting to register for the next Zoom play reading on Tuesday 26 May can email Bex Hutchins at drama.queens@westnet.com.au by 25 May.
