Gin Gin Little Free Library is a community collaboration that hopes to inspire both young and old to sit back, relax and delve into a good book or two.

The grand opening of the Gin Gin Little Free Library took place on Saturday after years of dedication from local community members.

The Little Free Library is situated ideally on the Bruce Highway at the Gin Gin Regional Courthouse Gallery, and with its eye-catching, bright red roof and door it’s sure not to be missed.

Gin Gin Regional Courthouse Gallery Director Suzanne Robinson said the joint effort between the Gin Gin Regional Library, the Gin Gin Men’s Shed with a special thanks to Gin Gin local Gordon Shankster who finished the project, and the Gallery had now come to fruition.

Suzanne said it was nice to share the love of reading with the community, and she hoped more people, young and old, would take up the pastime.

“For the community of Gin Gin, and tourists who stop in our beautiful town, because we are on highway one, it’s a major plus,” she said.

“Gin Gin isn’t a little town off the highway, and the Little Free Library is placed right in the middle of the main street, with … a cherry red roof, it is definitely very accessible.”

Suzanne said Little Free Libraries was a world-wide phenomenon, and it was as easy as take a book, enjoy and replace with another book, for others to share.

“We hope during the daytime, people will come, enjoy the ambience of the beautiful old building here, take in the artwork, sit and relax for a while and read until their hearts are content.”

Gin Gin Library Co-ordinator Sharon Millett said Little Free Libraries were popular all over the world, and it was nice to now house Little Free Library #102853 here in the Bundaberg Region.

“There is over 100,000 Little Free Libraries all over the world, in 108 different countries, so they are very popular,” Sharon said.

“The Courthouse Gallery are the caretakers, and the way the Little Free Library works is it will be available 24 hours a day, seven days a week. Of course, the Gin Gin Library provides a wonderful service, but we are not open 24 hours a day.

“We hope that all the members of the community are going to love having this Little Free Library here, as well as the visitors to our town.”

Gin Gin Little Free Library a wonderful idea

Divisional representative Cr Wayne Honor welcomed the opening of the Little Free Library, saying it was a wonderful idea, and it was nice to see the community coming together to support one another.

“It will give people a chance to enjoy some relaxation, what better way to enjoy the afternoon then sit on the veranda of the Courthouse Gallery with a cuppa tea or a coffee, and read a book with a friend,” Cr Honor said.

“It will give a chance for the visitors in our area to take a book, and replace a book.

“This will help us share each other’s visions, to help us read and relax.”

Council’s arts, culture and events portfolio spokesperson Cr John Learmonth said the Bundaberg Region was full of creative and artist people and housing the Free Little Library at the Gin Gin Courthouse was perfect.

“This is a great idea, I never knew these little libraries existed until last Christmas when I visited Tasmania, now they are popping up all over the place and it is really good to see them here in the Bundaberg Region,” Cr Learmonth said.

The Little Free Library is located at Gin Gin Regional Courthouse Gallery, 80A Mulgrave Street, Gin Gin.
