A fun run which raises money for breast cancer research will be taking place early next month, with participants encouraged to don their best pink outfits for the event.

Hosted by the Mater Chicks in Pink, the 31st RACQ International Women’s Day Fun Run 2022 is calling on Bundaberg for its support on Sunday, 6 March.

It’s a cause that hits close to home, with breast cancer the most common type of cancer diagnosed in women in the Wide Bay Burnett region.

Mater Foundation Executive Director, Andrew Thomas said more than $1.5 million was raised during last year’s event to improve local services and support for women with breast cancer.

“The funds raised go directly to personalised, practical support services and life-saving breast cancer research at Mater,” Mr Thomas said.

Mater Private Hospital Bundaberg Allied Health Manager and Physiotherapist, Julie McGuiness, said the cause had touched those close to her.

“My immediate family and friends have been touched by cancer, so I feel strongly about doing what I can to help promote and bring awareness to the issue,” she said.

“I don’t know how many times I have said it, but I strongly believe having regular checks is essential to facilitate early detection and diagnosis of cancer where possible.

“I enjoy running and it has been a while since I’ve entered a fun run, so I am excited to participate this year.”

Ms McGuiness will be participating in the fun run for the first time this year, registering for the ‘Your Way’ route which enables people to follow a mapped trek or create their own.

Participants can complete a 3km walk along the Burnett River via the Riverside Boardwalk starting from the Riverside Parklands, or challenge themselves with a 6km route from Nielsen Park in Bargara and down along the sandy white coastline to Kelly’s Beach.

Alternatively, individuals and groups can map their own course of a chosen distance.

Mr Thomas said 2022 marked the second year that people could participate in the Fun Run through the ‘Your Way’ event, allowing people all over Queensland to take part in the iconic event.
