The annual Sugar Mill and Cane Fire tours will light up the night during the Childers Festival and provide an insight into the workings of the Isis Central Sugar Mill.
The popular tour is a highlight of the festival’s program each year offering visitors the chance to take a tour of the mill and experience an in-depth look into the modern cane-to-sugar process.
Guests will enjoy the spectacle of modern harvesting at a cane farm and watch a locomotive hauling cane bins to the mill before stopping at various locations around the mill where the process of sugar cane production is explained.
The night will then end with a barbeque dinner in Childers for guests to enjoy.
Council’s Arts, Culture and Events portfolio spokesperson Cr John Learmonth said the sugar industry was significant to the region with the cane tours an important inclusion in the festival program to celebrate history.
“It is not every day you can see the behind the scenes of a working sugar cane mill, and get up close to a cane fire, which is an amazing sight,” Cr Learmonth said.
“Childers Festival continues to draw tourists to the local area which provides a significant financial boost to the local community organisations and businesses, while showcasing the rich history of the town.
“This is a very popular event within the festival line up, so I encourage you to get your tickets now to ensure you don’t miss out.”
