More than 200 individuals and families will be supported by The Salvation Army in Bundaberg this festive season.

The news comes as the charity launches its Christmas Appeal for 2022, with an increased demand for assistance from people aged over 55 reported.

Major Chris Millard said the figure had already surpassed last year’s total of 130 for the same period, with “more and more people flowing through our doors every day”.

“We’re probably expecting this year’s figure over Christmas to exceed 200,” Major Millard said.

“And clearly, one of the reasons why we are seeing more people this year is because of the rising cost-of-living expenses which are ridiculous.

“While we are responding to young families, what we are seeing this year is an increasing number of people coming to us who are aged over 55.

“These are people we normally wouldn’t have been interacting with.

“Our resources are being stretched further and further, and that’s why if you can afford to lend a hand or make a donation, you’ll be making a huge difference to those who are really struggling.”

The Salvation Army is aiming to raise $3.1 million in Queensland this year through its Christmas Appeal to ensure no one is left in need during the festive season.

Bundaberg Salvation Army will also be hosting several local events, including the Toy Run, Community Carols Night and a Community Christmas Day lunch.

“Leaving no one in need also means leaving no one lonely this Christmas. We would love to see you at any of our events, church services or community programs during the festive season,” Major Millard said.

“For those needing food or gifts, or those feeling down or lonely this Christmas, please reach out to us at The Salvation Army Bundaberg by calling 4151 3014.

“For financial and emergency assistance, please reach out to our national financial support service on 1300 371 288 (9 am to 5 pm Monday to Friday).”

The Salvation Army also encourages community members looking for affordable Christmas shopping options to consider Salvos Stores.
