The Friendlies thanks selfless volunteers

Volunteers at The Friendlies include Phil Hodge, Rod Christensen, Karen Madigan and Betty Lovett.

This National Volunteers Week The Friendlies is sending a special shout-out to the dedicated individuals who give their time to help others.

The theme this year is “Better Together” which ties in with The Friendlies’ commitment to friendliness.

There are currently 26 volunteers helping throughout the hospital and interested newcomers are welcome to apply.

The volunteers are coordinated through The Friendlies Foundation, which provides an opportunity for people to help with maintaining and delivering the highest-quality health care.

Foundation coordinator Julie Anderson said volunteers played a valuable role.

“At The Friendlies, our volunteers are more than a helping hand — they are our ambassadors and champions,” she said.

“They’re a smiling face, a kind word and a friendly ear to listen.”

Volunteer roles include:

  • Meeting and greeting patients and visitors entering the hospital;
  • Sitting and talking with patients;
  • Helping out in stores and maintenance;
  • Selling craft items that have been donated by community members.

Volunteering is known to deliver social benefits including a sense of purpose and fulfilment, building self-confidence, and maintaining health and wellbeing.

Friendlies volunteer Phil Hodge said he started his role in stores to stay active and have a social network.

Others like Sue Hackett became involved after being a patient at The Friendlies when she was diagnosed with breast cancer in 2017.

“After I finished my treatment with The Friendlies hospital, I wanted to give back to the hospital I loved so much,” Sue said.

“One of the opportunities that I had was to be a volunteer, which I absolutely love.

“I do it one day per week and it keeps me in touch, and it feels like home.”
