Students spread safety message through mural

Bundaberg youth have collaborated with local organisations to create a mural highlighting the region's young carers and their ideas about ‘safe places'.

The brightly coloured project will soon be proudly displayed at Kepnock State High School.

It's all part of a collaboration between the local Child Protection Week Action Group, the school and the Little Dreamer program, which provides support to students who are carers for family members affected by disability, chronic or mental illness, substance use or frail age.

Young carers recently came together to share their ideas about ‘safe places' and, with the help of artist Nefret Vickers, transformed these ideas into the mural that will be on display for all to see.

Last year Child Protection Week Action Group member Veronica Taylor said a similar mural at the YMCA was unveiled by the Little Dreamers program and had won a Highly Commended award at the annual Child Protection Week Awards.

She said its success had paved the way for the newest mural project.

“I really wanted to follow on from the success of the mural at the YMCA last year,” Veronica said.

“It seemed logical that Little Dreamers won the highly commended, and they ran with it because it's been a great school holiday project for them as well.

Kepnock State High School student Hannah Derrick said she was proud to have participated in the most recent mural project.

“I think it's finished up very beautifully,” she said.

“It's got a lot of different elements of things that represent child protection and how we can identify what's safe and what's unsafe.

“I’m very proud of myself to know that I've made something like that and I've been a part of something so special.”

A number of events will take place across the Bundaberg Region from Sunday 3 to Saturday 9 September in recognition of Child Protection Week.
