Born and bred Bundaberg local Marjorie McLeod celebrated her 100th birthday this week with a special celebration with friends and family.
The festivities included flowers, balloons and cake as well as a visit from Bundaberg Region Mayor Helen Blackburn.
Marjorie went to school locally before attending teacher’s training college in Brisbane when she was just 15 and got her first posting at a primary school in Cynthia between Eidsvold and Monto two years later.
“I rode a horse four miles to the school where I was teaching,” Marjorie said.
“I really enjoyed teaching, I enjoyed time with the kids.”
Marjorie met her husband when he was home on leave from the army and after they got married, the couple moved to his family’s farm.
They had four children, three boys and a girl, who all grew up in Bundaberg and helped out on the farm.
Marjorie taught at local schools including South Kolan State School and said she had always enjoyed living in Bundaberg.
“It’s just been easy,” she said.
“I’ve never had any struggles here at all.”
These days Marjorie enjoys visits from her grandchildren and getting involved in all the social activities at the retirement community where she celebrated her 100th birthday.
“I like to do whatever’s going, I’m quite content to do that and join in,” Marjorie said.
“When you get as old as this, you think ‘well now I’ll behave myself!’”
