Coffee drinkers raise funds for homelessness

CafeSmart brings together coffee roasters, cafés and coffee drinkers around the country to help people who are homeless.

Coffee drinkers will be able to support those who are experiencing homelessness with the fundraising initiative Cafesmart being held at two local businesses.

Alowishus and The Coffee Club at Stockland will donate $1 from every coffee and cupcake will be donated to Cafésmart, an initiative of Street Smart – Action against Homelessness.

Funds raised through Cafesmart all come back to the local area.

In previous years the funds raised in Bundaberg were given to Edon Place for hygiene packs for local women who had experienced domestic violence.

Since its inception 13 years ago over $2 million has been raised and donated back to the communities which raised the money.

CafeSmart brings together coffee roasters, cafés and coffee drinkers around the country to help people who are homeless.

Participating cafés generously donate $1 per coffee sold to fund projects.

Alowishus Delicious is participating for the 12th year in a row with staff dressing to the theme of yellow and encouraging the community to get on board and grab a coffee or a hot drink this Friday.

Delicious yellow cupcakes will also be for sale and a $1 donation will be made for each one sold.

StreetSmart Australia CEO Adam Robinson the day was a chance for others to help the less fortunate.

“When more than 1 in every 200 people are homeless in Australia, we know there is a problem,” Adam said.

“When services working on the frontlines are telling us that this is a figure is likely to be much higher, and we have coherent public response – that is a huge cause for concern.

“Most people want to do something about it, and to help people that are struggling in their own community.

“CafeSmart is really a grassroots movement that is giving people a vehicle to effect some change and positively impact people’s lives.”
