Hundreds of people have benefitted from Bundaberg Hospital’s Lighthouse crisis support space in the first year.
During mental health week, 5-13 October, employees and consumers celebrated the one-year anniversary since the opening of the space.
Located within walking distance of the Bundaberg Hospital Emergency Department, Lighthouse has filled a critical gap in mental health services in the community, providing immediate support for individuals in mental health crises.
Lighthouse offers a warm, caring, non-clinical safe space where individuals experiencing crises can find respite and safety.
This innovative facility is staffed by dedicated mental health peer workers alongside clinicians from mental health and alcohol and other drugs services.
Over the past year, 282 consumers have accessed the service, leading to a total of 488 presentations.
Notably, 49 individuals received their first-ever referral to mental health services in Queensland through Lighthouse.
WBHHS Executive Director of Mental Health and Specialised Services Robyn Bradley said the establishment of Lighthouse had been a significant step forward in addressing mental health needs in the local community.
“By providing a non-clinical space where individuals can seek help, we are not only offering immediate support but also fostering a culture of understanding and care,” she said.
“Since opening we have found most referrals to Lighthouse originate from the emergency department on Sunday, which has highlighted a demand for mental health support during times when traditional services may not be fully operational.
“We have also seen a diverse demographic of people access the service with an equal gender split and 10 per cent of presenters identifying at First Nations.”
Ms Bradley said one of the most rewarding parts of watching the service grow had been the overwhelmingly positive feedback from consumers.
“It is reassuring to see some of our consumers returning to the service more than once after having positive experiences,” she said.
Lighthouse Crisis Support is a walk in service open 7 days a week, 2 pm to 9 pm.
