As part of the Australian Heritage Festival, Childers Heritage Day on Saturday 10 May will see community groups and organisations hold activities at 16 heritage sites across the town.
Childers Heritage Day Committee Publicity Officer Desley Cowley said the entire town was involved under the theme ‘Preserving the past for the future’.
“There are two walking tours, one’s a military walking tour, and one is the one that Scott does, he’s our President, and he starts at the pharmacy and does a walk around most of the buildings that are participating,” Desley said.
“[We hope visitors get] a bit of a combination of learning about the history, but also just being part of the community and getting involved.”
Desley said the group were keen for more people to get involved on the day as volunteers.
“What we would like to do is find people that like telling stories or just to help guide people around the town.
“And if there’s anyone sort of thinking, well, they don’t want to commit to a long term volunteer role but would like to come and see what a bunch of lovely people we all are, that’s a perfect time to come for a one-off event.”
The group are organising fun activities for children like egg-and-spoon races and painting replica cross-cut saws, along with guided tours, live music and a blacksmith demonstration.
