The community is invited to check out what’s on offer at the upcoming Bundaberg Model Railway Club open day.

Here is what the group had to say about the event as well as the history of their organisation:

Our club was started in mid 1974 after an advertisement was placed in the local paper and five model railway enthusiasts replied.

Between them they put together a model cane train layout, this layout was displayed at the 1974 Harvest Festival which was held at the Civic Centre.

This was deemed to be a great success and the club was formed.

Over the next couple of years the club held meetings at various locations (the Bundaberg Development Board, a residential garage, an old butchers shop).

In November 1985, the club moved to the old bar area of the main pavilion at the Bundaberg Show Grounds were they remained for the next 19 years.

In 2001 an application was made to the Queensland Government Community Benefit Fund for a grant to build a dedicated clubhouse.

Approval was granted after negotiations with the Bundaberg City Council, the land where the clubhouse sits today was granted and the clubhouse was built.

As a way of saying thanks to the Community Benefit Fund, the Bundaberg City Council, and the citizens of Bundaberg, the club holds 2 public open days each year.

The club is currently in its 50th year of successful operation, one of the oldest in Queensland, this is largely due to the great team of members we have, who provide great interaction, skills and advice to the public and any other organisations who support our activities.

Our club is very family orientated where everyone can enjoy or participate in the hobby of model railroading and its many related facets.

In 2024 the club was given a grant from the Queensland Government Benefit Fund allowing us to fit solar panels and fully air condition the clubhouse to make a more comfortable environment during the hotter weather.

Our next open day will be held on Saturday 12 April from 9 am until 3 pm at our Kensington St club house, a sausage sizzle and cold drinks will be for sale on site.
