As part of Childers Heritage Day on Saturday 10 May, local historian Scott Stedman will lead a historical walking tour around the town, stopping to admire many of Childers’ heritage sites.

Scott shared all the details of what to expect from this fascinating stroll.

What does the tour feature?

The tour commences at Christ Church (Anglican Church) Childers at 9 am with the history of the Church and a viewing of the beautiful stained glass windows.

This is followed by gathering outside the Grand Hotel to hear tales of ‘Luke the Spook’ the resident ghost and the history of the pub.

The walk then moves up the street and across Churchill Street to Millennium Park to hear the South Sea Islander involvement in the development of the Isis District sugar cane industry.

This is followed by the story of two devastating fires to occur in Childers, with some other history along the way.

The tour then returns to the Old Pharmacy Museum for the story of Thomas Gaydon and beginnings of this immense collection.

The walk then finishes at the Isis Masonic Lodge, open to the public only on Childers Heritage Day.

What will attendees experience?

An historical walkabout discovering the history of Childers through its buildings, parks and even ghosts.

Recent feedback from one person who attended last year is that they enjoyed it so much they plan to join the tour again this year.

We try to make it informative and enjoyable.

Who do you encourage to attend the tour?

Anyone who has an interest in history, a former resident of Childers or a descendant of old Childers families.

Childers, as a stopover for weary travellers, since travel began seems to hold a special place in the hearts of many travellers, not even connected to our town, other than that pitstop on their way to somewhere else.

Childers has a fascinating history transcending our timber industry, developing sugar cane and other farming and the elements going in to establishing this flourishing community.

Why is the walking tour a great way to learn about Childers history?

There is nothing like sharing a good story and interacting with the guide but also the other visitors who join the tour!

There is always a question asked that’s never been asked before. A perspective we haven’t thought of. Stories shared.

We can read books about Childers history but feeling and hearing embellishes the stories even more.

What is the cost to attend? Are bookings required, and how long does the tour last?

A gold coin is all that is asked, and this is donated to Christ Church Childers, where the tour starts.

Bookings are not required, just turn up before 9 am.

The tour lasts only one hour allowing plenty of time to explore all the other open buildings and events on the day.
