Local artist Debra West has paid tribute to an iconic symbol of the Australian landscape with her exhibition ‘King of the Bush’ currently on display in the foyer of the Moncrieff Entertainment Centre.
The exhibition features a range of artwork celebrating the Kookaburra and will be displayed until 30 June.
Debra said she had always been passionate about the Australian bush and the birds and animals within it.
“In this series ‘King of the Bush’ my aim was to capture some of the personalities of the laughing Kookaburras in my paintings,” Debra said.
“They are portrayed in my representational style and [in] one of my favourite mediums, soft pastels.”
Debra said she hoped visitors would enjoy her representation of the gregarious bird.
“The Laughing Kookaburra, renowned for its striking iridescent blue feathers and unmistakable raucous call captures our hearts,” she said.
“Kookaburras are formidable hunters, with their robust bodies and big powerful beaks, often seen on a branch or fence post scanning the ground for their prey of small reptiles, insects and small mammals.
“Ringing throughout the bush, the sound is both jovial and mischievous, reflecting their personalities.”
